A.C.S. has developed this course especially for the
inexperienced driver. The program has been designed for Class A and
B commercial vehicles. The training can include any necessary
endorsement offered by the State. All training is set up on the basis of
one Instructor to one Student; equipment; instructor travel expenses;
materials; and/or CDL Test, depending upon program selected.
The curriculum is as follows:
A. PRE TRAINING STUDENT
EVALUATION:
The instructor shall determine if the appropriate course has been
selected for the student via an initial evaluation. If difficulties
are anticipated for training procedures, equipment type, or time frames,
the student and/or employer shall be informed prior to initiation of the
training program. If it isdetermined that training must be modified,
or training must be terminated, the student (or employer), as it applies
shall be responsible for any time, equipment rental, and/or materials
involved.
B. INITIAL EVALUATION AND
INSTRUCTION:
INSPECTION/MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE ? The program provides review of
locations and explanation of components for safe operation and use of the
commercial vehicle type to be utilized during the training program.
Mechanical knowledge includes parts of the vehicle necessary to perform a
thorough vehicle inspection and inspection details. (Components will
vary depending on the equipment type.) Instruction on developing a
?systematic method? to ensure complete vehicle inspections will be
included in the curriculum.
SKILLS -- Demonstrations, instruction, and practice for
specific maneuvers for operating the equipment will be included in this
segment of the training program. There will be concentration on
areas of individual weaknesses. Maneuvers contained in the
program include, but are not limited to: Forward Stops; Backing;
Straight through; Alley docking; Right and Left turns; and parallel
parking.
EQUIPMENT HANDLING -- The student will be expected to
operate the equipment properly; double clutching; and learning to shift
smoothly. Any special equipment will be reviewed with the student if
necessary. Equipment handling instruction will include, but not
limited to: Clutching; Gear Usage; Braking; Steering; Turns; Traffic
Laws; Defensive driving; and/or Seat Belt usage.
REVIEW -- Prior to continuance of training, the instructor
will review and analyze the progress of the student. The elements
utilized to make this determination will include attitude, ability,
confidence, and proficiency demonstrated by the student. (This
evaluation will normally be completed within the first day of
training.) The student and/or employer will be advised at this point
of the recommendations of the instructor for the continuance of the
training program. A decision will be made (mutually between the
student/employer and the instructor) whether or not to continue with the
training program. (This determination does not serve as a guarantee
that the student will pass the program.) The intention of the
initial evaluation and instruction segment is to be used as a guide for
the student and the instructor.
C. COMPLETION OF TRAINING PROGRAM:
DRIVING -- 'On the Road' training will not commence until
the initial evaluation has been completed and the instructor is confident
that the student is prepared to continue. After the student has
reached a comfort level in the ?off-road? environment, they will be given
an opportunity to drive in real traffic situations. The student will
be expected to follow very specific criteria such as: Turn
approaches (stop if necessary; turning procedures; and completing turns);
Intersections (stopping; driver awareness; driving through); Urban/Rural
(maneuvers; lane changes; curves; railroad crossings; bridges/overpasses);
Stop/Start (approach; stop and resume); Expressway (merge; straight; lane
changes, and exits), etc.
INSPECTION/MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE - Continued review of locations
and explanation of components for safe operation and use of the vehicle
type will occur.
SKILLS -- Continued demonstrations, instruction, and
practice for specific maneuvers while operating equipment will be included
in this segment of the training program -- with concentration on
areas of individual weaknesses. The skills included will be as
listed previously, but not limited to these skills.
EQUIPMENT HANDLING -- The instructor will continue to
review the proper equipment handling; double clutching, and learning to
shift smoothly. Again, any special equipment will be review with the
student if necessary.
D. FINAL REVIEW:
At a point when the instructor and student agree that the student is
prepared, the instructor will review and analyze the progress of the
student. The elements utilized to make this determination will
include attitude, ability, confidence and proficiency demonstrated by the
student throughout the training program. The student and/or employer
will be advised at this point as to the recommendations of the instructor
for the final testing and evaluation.
E. QUALIFICATION:
The necessary skill test will be scheduled through A.C.S.
F. CERTIFICATE:
Upon successful completion, a certificate suitable for framing will be
issued to the student.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Training cannot be initiated without the
following original documents:
A. CDL/TIP
VALIDITY -- Prior to the initiation of the training, the Instructor
must verify that the student holds a valid Temporary CDL.
(Additional training programs are available through A.C.S. to assist
the student in preparing for the State written tests. This is
offered at an additional fee.)
B. PHYSICAL
QUALIFICATION -- The Instructor shall verify that the driver holds a
current and valid DOT medical card, prior to the initiation of the
training. (A.C.S. has a listing for available vendor
options.)

Substance Abuse Testing Program available for this testing.)
